About a Bridge to Independence

History

A Bridge To Independence was formed by a partnership of three (3) Center for Independent Living Centers (CIL) when they identified the need for case management of the individuals that utilized the independent living services that the CILs provided.

The three (3) CILS were: Voices For Independence (VFI) in Erie, PA, DON Services in New Castle, PA, and Tri-County Partnership for Independent Living (TRIPIL) in Washington, PA.
The three CILs operated Service Coordination internally within each separate agency until December of 2012 when the three Agencies CEO’s came together and decided to brand the service coordination service as A Bridge To Independence and A Bridge To Independence was created.

A Bridge To Independence was still housed in each of the three (3) offices as different regional offices, however, was being operated under its own entity with its own Board of Directors. In the summer of 2013, the Central Office of A Bridge To Independence closed, and the individuals served were moved to Service Coordinators out of the North Regional Office (at the time housed in the VFI building) and the South Regional Office (housed in the TRIPIL building.)

A Bridge To Independence serviced consumers in 15 counties of Western Pennsylvania ranging from Erie County down the interstate 79 corridor to Fayette County.

In the summer of 2015 the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services put out a bulletin stating that Service Coordination Services could no longer be housed within the building of a PAS building. Therefor our two (2) regional Offices were required to move to new stand-alone locations. The North Regional Office moved from the VFI building to EBCO Park in Erie PA, and the South Regional Office moved from the TRIPIL Building to the location off Chestnut Street in Washington PA.

In the summer of 2018, A Bridge to Independence applied and was approved to provide service coordination in 57 counties throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. A Bridge To Independence subsequently opened an office in Allentown PA to better serve the individuals in the Central part of the state along with the Eastern side of the state.

In the Spring of 2019, A Bridge to Independence applied and was approved to provide Office of Developmental Programs Service Coordination for the Adult Autism Waiver. A Bridge To Independence is approved to provide the Adult Autism Service Coordination in all 67 counties throughout the state of Pennsylvania.
